Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to implement daily stable operations, and follow rules and regulations for racing.The unit applies to individuals who have experience handling racehorses and who work under broad direction, using practical skills and specialised knowledge within a racing stable workplace in the harness or thoroughbred codes.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with applicable state/territory animal welfare and workplace health and safety legislative requirements.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Users are advised to check with the relevant Principal Racing Authority (PRA) for current requirements.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Define job responsibilities of senior stable hands
  • Identify the obligations and responsibilities of trainers in relation to the operation of a racing stable
  • Comply with specific job responsibilities according to the rules and regulations of racing and the obligations of racing employees
       
Element: Comply with stable policies
  • Follow workplace policies and procedures for the correct use and security of medications
  • Comply with workplace health and safety requirements and emergency plans for stable
  • Follow procedures for reporting, managing and monitoring horses
  • Maintain workplace conditions to comply with rules of racing and workplace health and safety requirements
       
Element: Monitor daily operations in racing stable
  • Verify the arrival of rostered staff and confirm duties for the day
  • Confirm and clarify amendments to normal routines with trainer
  • Verify completion of gear and equipment maintenance
  • Monitor supplies and prepare orders according to stable policies and procedures
  • Update and maintain stable records according to workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
